One of Three

One of Three

Character Description

John is a loner. Mainly keeps to himself. He is in the culinary union as a cook and has plans of buying property up in the mountains to further his study of the stars when he retires but his life is suddenly interrupted by a viral outbreak.

John: The streets were silent as if all the life has been sucked out of it. Fear kept them inside… away from the infection. Even I was contained but didn’t know where. How it started is yet to be revealed.

Nobody trusted anyone or anything. The simplicity of everyday living was now the main deterrent if you wanted to be safe.

Normal functions that took no thought that was once fluent actions such as opening a door, shaking a hand, grabbing an item were now frowned upon if the correct protocol was not met but there were so many of them to break the habit that they abandoned the way they were for a secluded referendum for the time being.

A virus swept through the Neon City like a dust tornado. Reports came out with statistics, analysis, symptoms, and how to protect yourself. The information was scattered across the globe like the wildfires in California to Australia. Numbers weren’t adding up. Death tolls weren’t making sense. Confusion is all it instilled in the people.

The tinfoil hats with their conspiracies. The political parties with a finger pointed at the other. The religious types saying it’s a sign from God. The economic players fearmongering with the threat of an economic crash. All of them acting like a child who didn’t get picked at recess for a kickball game thus giving a reason for misbehavior and outbursts. Man against man… The summary of species’ overall history. Embarrassing.

Was I alone in this world I thought…

Who were my people… is this what they have become. Not for once have I seen a unity amongst any of them.

The rich filling ad campaigns with millions of dollars when all the money could have helped millions with bad health issues or the poor, at least feed them, put roofs over their heads. Just to be elected to fight for what you need as a community… Umm didn’t all that money you wasted could have benefited the causes of the community? And the mindless people that follow these corrupt money men.

Treatments… they needed us to die off.

The ignorant preaching climate change meanwhile worshiping these false idols with their jets and garage filled automobiles giving awards to each other while sniffing their own farts. I have never seen more carbon-filled emissions than at an awards ceremony. Hey, at least we can all be entertained while the world goes to shit… Right?

And best ones are the people that say one thing and don’t do a dam thing about it but when tragedy hits close to home then they suddenly become activists.  Where have you been??

These people I’m amongst. I like to think that we are all still in the child stage of growing up and never really have gotten to the adult stage as they claim we do by-laws, privileges, and responsibilities and not based on empathy, compassion, and equality, and ethics.

They could never see the broader scope of a future unless it was dictated by the principles of their belief systems.

The real virus isn’t the one that is infecting everybody’s lungs although it could be looked at as a symbolic warning.

No, the real virus is us… the human race.

It wasn’t a mandatory lockdown even though they said it was. The earth didn’t belong to any of us. What I believed in didn’t matter at this point. Natural selection had begun until the virus was quarantined off for good. What level of precautions were they gonna take this to if it became an endless cycle with no cures.

I don’t know maybe… maybe we are under some observation by some unknown source. I mean we experiment on mice for biological or scientific needs. Why can’t we be experimented on… maybe we have been since the dawn of our species. Maybe we’re all just probes gathering information for one huge power source. Like a computer motherboard. One big psychological experiment.

Men changing history to suit their favor. HA!

Was anyone being really honest? The truth… it’s been manipulated for too long. It needed to end. The Neon City could become like its ancestors, a ghost town. All I wanted to do is see the beautiful things few humans on this earth have created.

I guess if I look at it from a balance standpoint meaning yin and yang, up and down, left and right, Light and dark, hot and cold, rich and poor, truth and lie, life and death maybe this is the essence of the planet we live on. There always has to be a balance. Am I a part of that balance?

My name is John. And I am One of Three that has been infected. (To Be Continued)
